The Skill Sharpener

Growth edge: Coaching Skill

You lean on frameworks, scripts and the next technique, because they feel safe, and because they've worked before. There's nothing wrong with structure. But if you're honest, you know you're not yet adapting in the room the way you'd like to.

Your next stage of growth isn't more information. It's practice, choosing one coaching skill and deliberately working it until it stops feeling like a technique and starts feeling like you.

Your 30-Day Growth Plan

Choose a single skill to focus on: Holding valuable silence, challenging without pushing, or staying in step with the client.

Without judging yourself, track every time you notice yourself struggling to use the skill well and notice whats making it hard to use.

Deliberately use that one skill in every session this week or ask a coach friend to practice mock sessions with you, even if it feels clunky.

Getting more experience and opportunities to refine the tool, make it easier to use and build your confidence.

After each session, note where you used the skill well and where you defaulted to old habits.

Ask with curiosity, not self judgment: what was happening in the moment that I took the action I did? What will I do differently next time?

Take what you learn in the previous weeks evaluations and apply it to sessions or practice sessions. Notice what shifts and evaluate any changes.

Keep repeating evaluation and implementation until the skill feels solid.
